Sailing

The Lewes Yacht Club was founded in 1932 to encourage water sports, boating, casual sailing and promote racing competition. We continue to encourage generations to appreciate the Delaware Bay and the joy of sailing and general water sports.

Our sailing committee is a very active group of devoted volunteers representing all sailing constituencies of the club, and includes our race committee. We are a member of US Sailing, CBYRA (Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Assn) and MAYRA (Mid Atlantic Yacht Racing Assn). LYC will be hosting youth events for CBYRA and MAYRA this year.

Our racing fleet includes keel boat races on Wednesdays evenings and Sunday afternoons. Dinghy one design boat races are Saturdays that include sunfish, optis, lasers, hobies and Mobjacks.

For the beginner, we offer a junior sailing program with all US Sailing certified instructors from mid-June through mid-August for ages 5 and up with instruction in Optis, Sunfish, Lasers, and Hobie Cats. An adult learn-to-sail program is also offered with personalized instruction using the Flying Scot sailboat.

LYC co-hosts the MAYRA Cape to Cape Regatta annually on the first Saturday of August and is the home of the annual Lewes Cup.
  • Notable regattas hosted in the past are: 2013 World Sunfish Championship, Regional Junior Olympics 2019, US Sunfish Masters 2019, and the US Sunfish Women’s National.

The summer of 2024 there will be CBYRA and MAYRA events, the mobjack national, and the Lewes Cup. In September of 2025, LYC is looking forward to hosting the Opti Atlantic Coast Championship.
